The Civic United Front (CUF) party plans to hold a grand public rally next Saturday in Zanzibar, ahead of the unveiling of the much-awaited first draft of the union constitution.
According to Mr Salim Abdallah Bimani, the party’s director for publicity and mass communication, “the aim of the rally is for Zanzibaris to deliver their message on the new constitution.”
A press statement released in Zanzibar by the organizing team, the rally would be held on Saturday from morning to evening at the Kibandamaiti ground in the municipality.
The statement was silent about the dignitaries expected to attend the rally, but some Chama Cha Mapinduzi bigwigs, including Mzee Nassor Hassan Moyo, retired presidents Dr Amani Abeid Karume and Dr Salmin Amour had been invited.
CUF is leading a section of Zanzibaris demanding major reforms in the union structure, mainly calling for more autonomy for Zanzibar, including its having a seat in the United Nations, while CCM leaders have been drumming up support for the current structure of the union.
