Somji shines at weekly golf meet

Riyaz Somji was unstoppable when he returned sizzling seven under 43 points to emerge overall winner at Sarakikya Cup Golf Tournament held over the weekend at Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC).

Somji, playing off handicap- 18, put in wonderful efforts to beat other 36 golfers who turned up for the one-day 18 holes Stable Ford format tournament organised in honour of senior golfer Mirisho Sarakikya who was among the participants.

The first runner-up position went to Luv Lodhia, handicap-10, who also fired a stunning score of four under 40 points, while Tony Frisby, handicap-11, finished third with two-under 38. Francis Julius, handicap- 5, Joe Murithi, handicap- 16 and handicap-19 Jagdish Ahluwalia carded 38, 37 and 36 points to finish fourth, fifth and sixth overall winners respectively.

Following his impressive score Somji saw his handicap promoted from 18 to 16. Lodhia, meanwhile, will now be playing off 9 from 10, with Frisby playing off 10 from the previous 11. Julias’s handicap improved to four from five.

The tournament attracted a host of senior golfers including Michael Shirima, Gelase Ruta, who is a Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) treasurer and Sarakikya, whose scores were not good enough to win prizes.

John Said, playing off handicap-2, took this week’s Caddy tournament top prize with three under par 69 nett in the 18 holes Stroke Play event held on Monday at the same course. Pascal Julius, handicap- 12, carded 69 to finish as runner-up. Nuru Mollel, handicap +2, posted the lowest gross score, after returning 70 points.

The Caddy tournament is organized every Monday at the AGC course and aims at improving the standard of gold among non-members of the clubs who are prohibited from taking part in club games. Many national team members are also coming from caddy rank.
