Thirteen people died on the spot and one miraculously cheated death when a four-wheel drive vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a goods truck at Isuna village on the Singida-Dodoma Highway.
Those who died were identified as Haji Mohamed (29), a resident of Msisi village in Singida, Salma Omar of Itigi, Manyoni, Mtunku Rashid (68), a resident of Sanjaranda, Manyoni, Swalehe Hamis (28) of Sanjaranda, Nyamumwi Omari (10) and Samir Shaban ( 20).
Others are Mwareki Nkuwi (35), a resident of Ikungi, Athman Kalemba (38), Ramadhan Mkanga, a resident of Sanjaranda, Manyoni and Omar Shaban (44) a resident of Itigi, Manyoni.
Three bodies could not be identified immediately as well as the name of the casualty who narrowly escaped death. The Singida Regional Police Commander, Mr Geofrey Kamwela, told reporters here that the accident occurred at 8am.
It involved a goods truck of ‘Scania’ make with registration number T.687 AXD, property of the Dar es Salaam-based Mussa Transport Company.
The ill-fated four-wheel drive vehicle of ‘Noah’ make with registration number T.730 BUX was the property of Mr Mbua Ndofo of Ikungi, Singida.
Mr Kamwela said the ill-fated ‘Noah’ was travelling from Itigi to Singida while the truck, which carried fresh fish, was on its way to Dar es Salaam from Mwanza.
He added that the driver of the ill- fated truck and his assistant fled soon after the accident. The RPC said investigations are going on but did not rule out reckless driving and speeding as the cause.
