At least three people have been killed and more than 1,000 arrested Thursday in Gabon on the second day of rioting following re-election.
According to opposition Jean Ping, the elections commission has inflated President Ali Bongo’s score and extended his family’s rule in the country for another seven years.
Ping is the main challenger among the oppositions and he had earlier called on the president to step down.
About nine neighborhoods of capital Libreville have witnessed violent protests for two days and parliament building too was set on fire.
Interior Minister Pacome Moubelet Boubeya said, “We want everyone to… witness the level of devastation… organised by certain politicians who do not want to recognise their defeat.”
Boubeya added several supermarkets, shops, TV stations and homes have been looted in the capital and the arsonists had targeted the city hall too.
Granades were used by the protesters and police has seized AK-47 too from them, mentioned the minister.
Ping confirmed two people have been killed in the rioting and several others have been wounded.
He allege the presidential guard assaulted his party headquarters.
