5,000 Nigerian Doctors Serving In South Africa: Report

A new report reveals about 5,000 medical practitioners from Nigeria are currently in South Africa and this mean almost every hospital in the country has a sizeable number of Nigerian doctors.

The information was revealed by Consul General of Nigeria in South Africa, Godwin Adama, citing statement issued by the Vice Consul, Information, and Culture, Mr. David Abraham, in Abuja on Monday.

He added that the medical practitioners were in South Africa’s teaching, public and private hospitals.

He added, “What this means is that Nigerian doctors and other professionals are constantly adding value to the system and this cannot be over-emphasized… South Africa is replete with many Nigerian professionals who are contributing to the economic development in both public and private sectors in the country.”

It is very true such things have not been reported properly or are under-reported and hence the Nigerian professionals will now allow contributions undermined and eroded by negative publicity, said Adama.

He further continued saying the doctors from Nigeria are involved in medical outreaches rendering health services to less privileged members of the society in South Africa and the consulate would continue celebrating their professionals in South Africa.

He added that partnering with Nigerian Associations in South Africa the consulate will call their doctors and other professionals to emulate to continue to be law-abiding.

Apart from this, the Secretary-General of the Nigerian Doctors’ Forum South Africa informed the consulate about their activities citing improved services are required in the South African health sector.
