African Life Assurance yesterday donated sports gear worth 5m/- to Tanzania Prisons Service, to support a sports bonanza for the Ukonga Prisons Officers College, scheduled to be held on the New Year’s Eve at the college grounds in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking in a brief presentation ceremony at the firm’s offices in Dar es Salaam, African Life Assurance Public Relations Manager, Rishia Kileo said the kits include sets of jerseys and shorts, which will be used during the bonanza Kileo said they have provided the sports gear to the Prison waders because they are part of security forces, which are among their major stakeholders.
On his side Senior Superintendent of Prison (SSP), Ahmad Said Mwendadi, who is also the Chief Trainer at the Ukonga Prisons Officers College acknowledged the donation from the insurance firm, saying it would go extra mile in making the bonanza colourful.
He said the gear will be used in the sport bonanza which apart from health reasons, it also aims at bringing together families and staff of the college to celebrates and welcome the New Year as one family. Mwendadi said the bonanza will involve various games including football, basketball, volleyball, netball and others.
He further said apart from games, they have also arranged for a voluntary health check ups and test among the participants. He said this is the first time the college has organised such event, although in other Tanzania Prisons Services departments similar events have been staged annually.
Mwendadi said the college has serious commitment in promoting and developing sports and they are proud of their hockey and volleyball teams, which are participating in national and international level competitions.
He said, their next target and long term plan is to make sure their football team is promoted to the top flight league as their colleagues from Mbeya, Prison FC represent the forces in the Mainland Premier League.
