The African Union and former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan have strongly condemned the cowardly terrorist attack against innocent civilians in Westgate Shopping Mall, which caused loss of many lives.
The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma expressed solidarity of the AU with the government and peoples of Kenya and presented the AU’s heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Annan said he was shocked and horrified by the brutal attack against innocent people in the Westgate Shopping Mall.
“I would like to express my deepest condolences to all those who have lost family, friends and loved ones in this tragedy, and my sympathy to those injured and affected by the events,” said Annan in a statement.
The two leaders said the act should be condemned in the strongest possible terms and no cause can ever justify the deliberate killing of innocent civilians.
Dlamini-Zuma reiterated AU’s commitment to sustain its efforts to counter terrorism throughout the continent, as well as to pursue its efforts to stabilise the situation in Somalia and the fight against Al Shabaab, through its Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
Annan added that those who have committed the terrible crime must be brought to justice as swiftly as possible.
“Let us all reaffirm our commitment to work for peace, tolerance and justice for all,” Annan said.
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame in his Twitter handle said they stand in solidarity with Kenyan brothers, sisters and condemns terror. He also conveyed his condolences to President Uhuru and the people of Kenya.
“Kenya should not feel alone – the region, African and the world are with you. The Kenyan spirit is strong and will prevail,” said Kagame.
