Tanzanian agriculture minister Japhet Hasunga said agricultural laws will bring solution to challenges that the country’s farmers are facing and targeted goals could be reached.
He has directed experts to draft the agricultural laws ensuring it to be completed by July.
Speaking in Dodoma the minister said, “Tanzania needs an agricultural law because currently we are using the agriculture policy which was enacted in 2013. We also need to review the agriculture policy to make it more current.”
Deputy Minister,Innocent Bashungwa and Permanent Secretary, Eng Mathew Mtigumwe too attended the meeting with ministry management.
He explained most of the laws are those that is enacted for various crop boards, which cannot provide solutin to the problems of farmers.
The boards are created to managed cash crops like tea, coffee, cashew, sisal, cotton, sugarcane, tobacco, pyrethrum and nuts.
He added that the main food crops have no boards even though those contribute significantly to national economy.
Bashungwa said the meeting was crucial and agricultural policy need to be mentioned directly.
President John Magufuli launched in 2018 second Agricultural Sector Development Programme. It is called as ASDP II, which will be implemented until 2023 and to attract investment of about 13.8trn.
