The Flames’ winning goal was scored by Atusai Nyondo in the 28th minute through a penalty after striker Emmanuel Sebanani handled the ball in the forbidden area.

But Haruna, who captained the Amavubi team in the absence of Olivier Karekezi, believes that the team needs to play more games together and will get stronger with time.

The Yanga player maker said, “We did our best to win the match but the Malawi defence did an excellent job to contain us and defend their one goal.”

“We played well but failed to score, and our opponents were good in defence but for me even if we lost we had a good game. And it was a good occasion for the coaches to assess their players,” added the former Etincelles, Rayon Sports and APR player.

He added, “We created several scoring opportunities in both halves but we failed to hit the back of the net.”

Coach Eric Nshimiyimana went into the friendly match without several key players including; midfielders Jean Baptist Mugiraneza, Jean-Claude Iranzi, goalie Jean-Claude Ndoli, and the professional trio of Dady Birori [AS Vita], Olivier Karekezi [CA Bizertin] and Salomon Nirisarike [Antweerp].

Rwanda is preparing for next month’s 2014 Fifa World Cup Brazil qualifier against Benin.
