More recyclers are needed in Dar es Salaam similar to what Laurian Mchau has been doing by converting solid wastes into charcoal and liquid wastes into fertilizers.
According to African Development Bank (AfDB) the population of Dar es Salaam to reach 10 million by 2030 and it would become one of the world’s mega cities.
The city is experiencing rapid growth and its current population is about five million. It could become home for 21 million people by 2050 and experts worry that Dar es Salaam could turn into a global megapolis a potential time bomb.
A concrete plan has been called to overhaul Dar es Salaam’s infrastructure and issues like solid waste production can be responded efficiently.
This is the reason the government has called for recyclers to manage the solid and liquid waste.
A data reveal the waste generated in the city doubled in 2017.
Meanwhile, a project called Integrated Solid Waste Management has come up in Dar es Salaam and it is to be funded by the government of The Netherlands.
The project is yet to start following solving some logistical issues.
An expert said, “Of the 4,600 tonnes of solid wastes produced in the city daily, 51 per cent of them are organic while the rest are non-organic ones, which can be recycled to produce a wide range of high quality products.”
