Arusha braces for golf tourney

Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) course is all set for the 2013 edition of the Northern Province Golf Tournament scheduled for May 25-26 this year. The Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) 36 holes stroke play is jointly organised by AGC and the union.

The host’s competition manager Abid Omari said in a letter to affiliate clubs, which the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ has its copy, this year’s event has attracted top amateur golfers from different local clubs.

He said the event is open to ladies, gentlemen and juniors with a Certified Congu Handicap. The deadline for confirming participation is next Wednesday.

“We have the Northern Province Tournament in Arusha on the 25th and 26th of May, please email me the list of participants by Wednesday next week,” Omari insisted in his latter, adding that there will be a penalty of 5,000/- for entries sent after the deadline.

Entry fee is 30,000/- per head, out of which 5,000/- will go towards the development of Junior Foundation.

Hefty prizes await winners in different categories, including Division A (handicap 0-12), Division B (13-24) nett winners and runners-up, gross winner and runner-up, best 18 first day and best 18 second day players.

There are also prizes for ladies winner and runner-up nett, junior nett winner and runner-up and nett senior winner and runner-up.

The national tournament will be used as an order of merit event in which players will vie for important points to boost the chance of emerging with the 2013 Best Golfer of the Year Award at the end of the year.

Top players expected to take part in the competition include hosts Nuru Mollel, John Saidi, Julius Francis and Isaac Wanyeche.

Others are Adam Abbas, Frank Roman, Ally Mcharo from Moshi and Iddi Mzaki, Athumani Chiundu, Pembe Kondo, Michael Makala and Abdallah Yusuph from Dar es Salaam.

This will be the second national tournament to be staged this year after the February Moro Open which saw Nuru Mollel collecting his first trophy.
