A woman identified as Ms Violet Mathias is currently nursing a gunshot wound after she was shot by a policeman on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred at around 1pm at a CRDB Bank branch, which is located close to the offices of the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in the centre of the city.
Eyewitness said that before the incident a woman who entered in the area with a vehicle bearing registration number T888 BWW and parked it in a prohibited area.
Arusha Regional Police Commander, Liberatus Sabas, confirmed the incident, saying the woman was shot after failing to respect a police order.
“When police followed her and asked her to remove the vehicle and park it in a designated place, the woman refused and went straight into the bank,” Sabas said, adding: “One of the two police officers who was there removed air in the vehicle’s tyres.”
He said when Ms Mathias came back from the bank and found the tyres flat she went straight where the police were seated and confronted them, before threatening them with a pistol.
“After seeing the pistol a police officer defended himself by shooting her on her right hand arm,” the RPC said.
Thereafter the woman was rushed to the Arusha Lutheran Medical Centre(ALMC) for treatment. Reports from ALMC said the woman was responding well to treatment as doctors had managed to remove the bullet from her arm.
