Arusha youngsters shine in open tennis tournament


Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) juniors stole the show at the just-ended Upper Zonal Arusha Junior Open Tennis Tournament held at the club over the weekend.

The hosts outplayed their rivals from other clubs to take home 13 prizes out of 18 in the tournament that had nine categories, include boys under-18, boys and girls under- 14, 12, 10 and under-8. Clubs that brought juniors to the tournament were AICC Arusha, Gymkhana Morogoro Club (GMC), Moshi Gymkhana Club, Kijitonyama Dar es Salaam and hosts AGC.

Promising youngster Tumain Martin emerged the boys’ under-18 champion as his club mate Frank Menard finished second in the round robin event. The boy’s under-14 title went to Hassan Hamisi of AICC while Hasheem Kasim from GMC finished second.

Emmanuel Temba of AGC was under-12 boys’ winner and the second prize went to AICC’s Yusuph Laurent. Under-10 boys’ trophy went to Damas Telex of AICC, Kamuti Omari took second prize while Meshuck Said of AGC and Abdumalick Kudra of GCM took boys’ under-8 first and second prizes.


Girls under-14 top prize went to Eliza Peter and Venus Kaijage all from ARC, under-12 title went to Ester Mohamed and Eliza Peter again. Ester also triumphed in the under-10 category, followed by Maria Elisha, while Fei Amon and Leonea Isdori took girl’s under-8 first and second prizes respectively.

AGC coach Nicolaus Jonas was more than happy to see his boys shine in the tournament has he had expected. Before the tournament Jonas predicted that his juniors would perform wonders as they are the country’s best players and they confirmed that. Upper Zonal Trading Limited is sponsoring the tournament for the third consecutive year.
