Azam Media to beam live Mapinduzi Cup tournament

Football fans in Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar will watch live the Mapinduzi Cup soccer tournament expected to kick off later this month and reach its climax on January 12, 2014.

According to Azam Media managing director, Yusuf Bakhresa, Azam TV has improved its picture quality and encouraged football fans and television viewers to buy decoders and satellite dishes in order to enjoy various competitions to be aired by the station.

Speaking at the Azam Television inauguration ceremony in Dar es Salaam yesterday Bakhresa noted that the station currently has 52 channels and that Mapinduzi Cup would be aired live through Azam More and Azam Two channels.

“We have organized ourselves to ensure that we improve our television adverts due to the high quality of pictures and also to compete with other electronic media and gauge the reaction of our customers,” he said.

Bongo Movie star Muhsein Awadh ‘Dr Cheni’ told the ‘Daily News’ that the launch of Azam TV is their redeemer due to the fact that they will be paid for their movies aired by the station and it is their opportunity to promote their films.

Azam Media Limited recently signed a three-year contract worth 5,560,800,000/- with the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) to broadcast the ongoing Mainland Premier League.

“I am delighted to say that things have gone so well that we find ourselves ready and able to broadcast to that high standard in advance of the launch of the full Azam TV service,” said Azam Media Limited CEO Rhys Torrington. “We are delighted to have forged this partnership with TFF.

Our commitment is to invest in Tanzanian football and ensure it becomes one of the most attractive and profitable sports properties within East Africa and beyond,” said TFF Vice-President Wallace Karia.

Giants Simba and Young Africans Sports Clubs have kept mum over their participation in the Mapinduzi Cup soccer tournament to be held in Zanzibar next year.

According to Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) secretary general Kassim Haji, only five teams have confirmed participation so far.

They include defending champions Azam from the Mainland and four others from outside the country. Haji named the foreign teams as KCC and URA from Uganda, Mamelodi Sundown of South Africa and Kenya’s Tusker, who finished runner-up last year.
