Bagamoyo port construction censured

Zanzibar Revolutionary Government has been advised to convince their counterparts in the mainland to stop Bagamoyo port construction and instead build it in Zanzibar.

“Since we are true brothers with Tanzania mainland, Bagamoyo project should be halted and instead be constructed in Zanzibar” Omar Ali Shehe (CUF-Chakechake) suggested.

Mr Jaku Hashim Ayoub (CCM- Muyni) also raised his voice asking why there have been delays to construct a new port at Maruhubi (Mpiga Duri) in Zanzibar to replace the current Malindi Port which is overwhelmed with activities.

Mr Ali Salim Haji (CCM-Kwahani) asked in the House why the government has not increased equipment at the port for efficiency, while Zanzibaris wait for the proposed new port.

Responding to the questions, the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Communications, Mr Issa Haji Ussi, said although ports are union matters, each country in the Union enjoys its liberty in ports business, calling on Zanzibaris to work hard in construction of their own new port.

He said that Zanzibar was working hard by discussing with emerging development partners who are showing interest to support the constructions of the new port.
