Beach volleyball to mark Mapinduzi Day

The Zanzibar Volleyball Association (ZAVA) in collaboration with the Tanzania Volleyball Association (TAVA) has organized a six day Beach Volleyball competition to mark the 50th anniversary of the Zanzibar Revolution.

TAVA chairman Augustine Agapa told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam that the event, which starts on January 7 next year, will involve teams from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania Mainland and hosts Zanzibar.

He added that the tournament, set to wind up at the climax of Mapinduzi Day on January 12, will involve men and women’s teams.

According to Agapa, all the invited teams will be facilitated with accommodation, food and transport during the event as all the expenses are funded by a special committee established by the Zanzibar government (SMZ) to supervise the 50th anniversary celebrations.

The TAVA chief added that the event is also aimed to exchange experience amongst the participating teams. “TAVA and ZAVA are working together to ensure the development of volleyball in Tanzania and they have invited teams from neighbouring East African countries to make the 50th revolution anniversary more vibrant and to promote Zanzibar,” Agapa said.

The Zanzibar Minister for Information, Culture, Tourism and Sports, Saidi Ally Mbarouk, said sporting activities to mark ‘Mapinduzi Day’ are set for January 2 to 14, next year.

Other sports disciplines lined up for the celebrations are football (Mapinduzi Cup), netball, table tennis, handball, hockey, badminton, fitness, Special Olympics, squash and games for people with physical disabilities.
