The World Conference on Biological and Biomedical Science 2013 has opened in Dar es Salaam, with scientists calling on governments and private sector to use evidence-based innovations in public service and business interventions.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Director General for Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH) Dr Hassan Mashinda said innovation was now increasingly being recognised as a key determinant of the country’s long-term growth prospects.
“Everyone, from the government policy planners to private sector leaders, is keen to understand how the power of innovation can be ignited to drive enterprise profitability and faster,” he stated.
The conference has brought together experts and leaders from the academia, industry and public sectors.
The conference aims at promoting worldwide knowledge exchange in the latest biological and biomedical science and innovation, building networks among scientists, researchers, practitioners, students and business executives from around the world as well as strengthening co-operation among relevant organisations.
The Conference’s coordinator Dr Parakash Nagakatti, said it was the first time the conference was being held in Africa and the topics on discussion include Biology and neuroscience, Biochemistry, Biotechnology in Healthcare, Nanotechnology and Nanomedicine.
Others are Analytical and Bio Analytical techniques, Genetics and Human Genetics, Bioinformatics, Cell biology, Molecular Biology and Microbiology.
