Boko Haram Attacks Army Base in Borno State, Nigeria

Boko Haram attacked Friday night Guzamala Local Government Area in Nigeria and no casualties has yet been officially revealed.

The incident was confirmed by the Deputy Governor of Borno State, Usman Durkwa, in Maduguri saying this was another attack on a military base in Borno State lately.

He said, “It is unfortunate to confirm to you that there was an attack by Boko Haram extremists in a military base and other communities of Gudumbali.”

He urged people not to panic and every possible steps are being taken by the government and security operatives to restore peace in the area and also in the state as a whole.

Bunu Bukar, a Civilian Joint Task Force official in Gudumbali, said all of a sudden they saw people screaming and fleeing in panic on Friday evening.

In recent years many soldiers have been killed in attacks by Boko Haram in Borno and Yobe states. Since 2009 the Boko Haram insurgency has killed about 100,000 people.

Since 2015 the Boko Haram actions have been limited to three North-eastern states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa following strict crackdowns by the army.

Meanwhile, following the latest attack army chief Tukur Buratai has warned commanders of grave consequences if they abandoned their positions.

An official said the attackers were seen telling people to calm down and they quietly picked up the items of people before moving out of town.

He added it is not yet known whether any civilian was injured in fire exchange between the gunmen and Nigerian soldiers.
