Makerere University Business school (MUBS) in Nakawa is yet to be upgraded to a university level, an official has said.

In an interview with the Director, Public and International Relations at MUBS, Peter Simon Odoki said that there is a lot they have to fulfill before the school can gain its autonomy and at the moment they are awaiting communication from the ministry of education.
MUBS is affiliated to Makerere University. It specialises in business and management related courses. It will be know as the Metropolitan Universal Business School once it becomes autonomous.
“The matter is before cabinet, so until the proposal is passed we cannot become autonomous. The name and the logo that were adopted are just ideas that are liable to change.” Odoki said.
Odoki also noted that it is government that decides which institution becomes a public facility and for that matter therefore they will have to be patient.
He added that the institution will adopt more academic disciplines besides the business courses.
“There is a need to amend the universities and other tertiary institutions Act of 2001 so as to allow MUBS to award degrees as an independent University because in its current from the Act recognizes MUBS as an institution affiliated to Makerere University.” He added.
Odoki added that at the moment MUBS is still admitting students for diploma, certificate and postgraduate levels adding that Makerere still admits all the students for the bachelor’s degrees
“We actually are not going to admit bachelor’s degree students for the August intake because by that time we shall not have been granted the independent status since it’s still a process with a lot to implement.” Odoki added.
The proposal for MUBS autonomy was endorsed by cabinet in 2012 and until it is passed by parliament, the institute will remain an affiliate of Makerere University.
