CAF gives deadline to Yanga, Azam

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced November 30, 2013 the deadline for National Associations to confirm club engagements in next year’s continental club championships.

“All affiliated National Associations per the Interclubs Regulations have a deadline of 30th November 2013 to confirm their clubs engagements in the CAF Interclubs competitions (Orange CAF Champions League and Orange CAF Confederation Cup) for the season 2014,” CAF said in a statement.

“Any Association who wishes to participate in the competitions shall send to the CAF Secretariat an application accompanied by the admission fee of $300, and the application must reach CAF by mail, fax or e-mail not later than the 30th of November 2013,” it added.

For the players’ registrations, a complete list of maximum 30 players must be registered or submitted to the CAF Secretariat before December 31, 2013. It can be amended, but after January 15 next year, the list becomes final and no new players can be added nor replaced.

However, a National Association which registered less than 30 players earlier in January may be allowed to complete its list to 30 players after the 1/8th round (between July 1and August 5, August 2013) provided the additional list does not exceed seven new players.

Young Africans and Azam FC will represent Tanzania Mainland in the Champions League and Confederations Cup respectively, while KMKM and Chuoni will represent Zanzibar in the Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively.

Yanga are currently shopping for players who could be signed by the club for next year’s campaigns, but for Azam, things have slightly been low key and the their focus right now is to get a new coach to take over from Briton Stewart Hall, who parted ways with the ‘ice cream makers’ recently.

Qualifying for the Champions League significantly enhances Yanga’s ability to attract the very best players and this is among factors that have seen one of the most gifted goalkeepers in the country, Juma Kaseja, decide to re-join the Jangwani Street side.

Champions League is the prize that elite players and managers crave and with the mini transfer window opening, Premier League defending champions Yanga quickly moved in the market, splashing 40m/- to snatch the former Simba SC shot stopper.

Yanga Information Officer, Baraka Kizuguto, said the decision to sign Kaseja was based on instructions of the technical bench to strengthen the goalkeeping position in the squad after seeing the need of having a competent and experienced keeper for the Champions League.

The Jangwani Street club has also tied up several key players who reports said have renewed their contracts. They are defender, Kelvin Yondan, skipper Nadir Haroub Ally, winger Simon Msuva and striker Jerryson Tegete.

Yanga will be returning in the continental club championships after missing out the 2012/13 season.
