Porsche Unveils Panamera S E-Hybrid, Its First Plug-In Electric Car

Porsche is set to introduce the world’s first plug-in hybrid to the luxury class in the second generation Panamera. New Porsche Panamera Hybrid set for Shanghai Along with the Panamera S E-Hybrid with 416 hp of system power, two Executive versions are also making their debuts at Auto China in Shanghai – the Panamera S and Panamera 4S feature an extended wheelbase and an entirely new three-litre V6 biturbo engine. The Panamera range has been extended to ten models offering, says Porsche, a wider choice between sportiness and comfort, with further development enabling fuel savings of up to 56 per cent. The new car features revised styling ‘marked by tighter lines, more pronounced contours and newly shaped body elements’. The Panamera S E-Hybrid also features a more powerful electric motor, a higher-performance battery that supplies more energy and the ability to charge it externally from the electrical grid. The electric drive produces 95 hp (70 kW), which is more than double the power of the previous model’s electric motor at 47 hp (34 kW). The Panamera has an entirely new engine with the V6 biturbo replacing the previous 4.8-litre V8 engine in the Panamera S and Panamera 4S, and it is also found in the new Executive version of the Panamera 4S. The new unit produces 20hp more and 20Nm more torque, but up to 18 per cent better fuel economy compared to the V8 engine in the previous model. The S E-Hybrid also exceeds the performance of the previous model. The electric boost function, activated by kick-down, increases power in events such as overtaking situations and enables a top speed of 270 km/h. The parallel full hybrid concept developed by Porsche also offers “coasting” at higher speeds, which refers to free coasting with the internal combustion engine shut off and energy recovery by generating electricity. The new Panamera Turbo Executive and Panamera 4S Executive models, with their 15 cm longer wheelbase, offer more rear seating space and better ride comfort while on the outside the front end has been redesigned with larger air intakes and new LED headlights. The new, more swept-back rear window creates an extended silhouette leading round to a new, redesigned automatic boot lid with a wider spoiler. The new generation of Panamera models will be launched on the market in July 2013. UK prices have yet to be confirmed but are expected to start at around £70,600. At the beginning of next year, a new diesel engine with 300 hp (220 kW) will replace the current model, along with high-performance Panamera Turbo versions.

Detroit Electric unveils $135000 battery-powered sports car

Detroit Electric has unveiled the limited edition SP:01 two-seat electric sportscar in Detroit. Detroit Electric Unveils The SP:01, A $135000 Electric Sports Car Claimed to be the fastest pure-electric production car on the market, the SP:01′s top speed is 155 mph (249 km/h) and 0-62 mph (0-100km/h) takes 3.7 seconds. The new SP:01 was revealed at Detroit Electric’s new headquarters in the Fisher Building in downtown Detroit. Just 999 examples will be built at a new production facility in Wayne County, Michigan, with cars sold worldwide through a network of specialist retail partners. The rear-wheel-drive SP:01 features a compact, mid-mounted 201 bhp electric motor (delivering 166 lb ft of torque), a lightweight, purpose-designed battery pack and all-new carbon-fibre bodywork. Total weight is 2,354 lb. The vehicle is based on a strong yet lightweight aluminium platform, and is being launched following a five-year development and road-test programme. To deliver instantaneous torque for breath-taking acceleration, the SP:01′s innovative powertrain creates an electromagnetic field around the rotor shaft, which then spins at varying speeds to drive the wheels. Drivers can select one of four gear ratios for optimal acceleration, but unlike a manual shift in a conventional car, there is little need to change gear regularly to ensure brisk progress. With an energy storage capacity of 37 kWh, the battery gives the SP:01 a range of almost 190 miles between recharges, when tested to the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) standard. Detroit Electric’s home charging unit will enable drivers to achieve a full charge in 4.3 hours. “The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced,” said Albert Lam, Detroit Electric’s Chairman and Group CEO. “It is a milestone in the history of the Detroit Electric brand, but also a significant development for the international EV sector. The car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product, one that displays outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and which delivers an exhilarating driving experience.” The SP:01 uses smartphone applications to manage the complete in-car infotainment system
