Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) in Mtwara Region has opposed the indicative cashew nut prices published by the Cashewnut Board of Tanzania.
The ruling party has urged cashew nut farmers to be on their guard and protect their rights against exploitation.
According to a press release signed by the party’s regional secretary, Mr Shaibu Akwilombe, the decision was reached by the party’s Regional Executive Committee last week.
He said the meeting unanimously opposed the cashew nut indicative prices released by CBT earlier this month.
Mr Akwilombe explained that, according to the CBT price guidelines, the basic price would not protect farmers because it allowed for loopholes for administrators to take advantage and benefit from the crop.
“The retail price for this season is 1,000/- per kilo; the farmer will be paid 600/- and payment of the remaining 400/- will be deferred,” he explained.
He said the system will not only impact the voucher payment system but also encourage corruption to the disadvantage of farmers. The regional executive committee issued a directive to the regional authorities to ensure that farmers were paid without delay.
