Hearing and settling of commercial cases at the High Court’s Commercial Division should not take more than ten months, Chief Justice (CJ) Mohamed Chande Othman has observed.
The CJ made the remarks on Monday while speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the 6th annual meeting between the Commercial Court and the business community in the country.
“During the past 15 months, the Commercial Court was given new operating guidelines aimed at speeding up the process of settling commercial disputes. “During this meeting we will analyze whether the guidelines have been a success so that we can expand them to other courts.
Our aim is to check delays in the judicial system,” the CJ explained. The one-day meeting was attended by various stakeholders from both the Judiciary and the business community.
It was held under the theme: ‘Challenges of expeditious disposal of commercial cases in Tanzania.’ Judge Chande said delays in commercial disputes affect implementation of various projects and the economy as a whole and thus a need for swift settlement.
“Solving the disputes on time will help to boost trade, both within and outside the country,” the Chief Justice said. He was also of the view that going digital is among measures that will help to check delays since manual work consumes a lot of time.
