KENYA: The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) has demanded an explanation from the Government on petition to the UN Security Council to terminate cases facing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto at the International Criminal Court.
Society Chairman Eric Mutua said there was a lot of conflicting information from the Government on the issue.
“The fact that the Deputy President has come out denying being part of the petition leaves a question on the authenticity of the said petition,” he said.
Mutua also noted if at all there was a Government position on the issue, it should be clearly noted that theUN has no mandate to ask the ICC to drop the cases.
“The ICC can only be requested to defer the cases for a period of 12 months after which the request can be made again for a similar period,” he said.
Mutua was responding to questions from journalists during an LSK seminar on Immigration laws at a Nairobi hotel, on Friday.
