Five people died in separate incidents in Dar es Salaam including a two year old child who died after a wall collapsed during a social event, police reported on Saturday.
In the first incident, a wall collapsed as people were celebrating at Mbezi Juu in Kinondoni District, killing two year old Salimu Zakaria. Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Camilius Wambura said on Saturday the incident occurred at around 2.00 pm on Friday when the child, his parents and other people were celebrating at the home of Salehe Ayubu (33).
He said the wall suddenly collapsed killing the baby while eight people were injured. The deceased died while receiving treatment at Lugalo Hospital. He said that the wall surrounded a house owned by Majamu Hamis (44).
He listed the injured as Rukia Basi (33) of Mabibo area who is the mother of the deceased, Sofia Seif (46), Asha Seif (34), Zabibu Seif (44), Salama Seif (34), Bushira Sultan (41), Amina Aika (30) and Yakubu Jumanne (2). “Five people were treated at Mwananyamala Hospital and were discharged. Three are still at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH),” he said.
Meanwhile, two people died in a road accident on Friday along Mandela Road at External area in Kinondoni. Mr Wambura said that the road accident occurred at around 4.45 pm whereby a hit and run driver caused the deaths of a cyclist identified as Ibrahimu Ahmed (27) and his passenger Kelvin Mtatifikoro.
He said that the unknown driver of a Rav 4 vehicle crashed the motorcycle with registration number T 462 CHA which was headed into the same direction. “After being hit the motorcycle skidded under a lorry with plate number T792 BGM driven by Nassor Adam (36), a resident of Vijibweni area,” he explained. Both the rider and passenger of the motorcycle died on the spot.
Police are holding Adam while looking for the hit and run driver. A man identified as Robert Mwandisi (38), a resident of Mbezi Beach died on the spot after the vehicle he was driving overturned along Mwai Kibaki Road, Mbezi Beach in Kinondoni District.
Mr Wambura said that the incident occurred at around 4.45 a.m. on Saturday after the driver failed to control the vehicle, ending up overturning and plunging into a canal causing his death.
He said Mwandisi was coming from Kawe heading towards Mbezi Beach. The body of the deceased was taken to MNH for preservation. Investigations are in progress.
A man allegedly committed suicide on Friday at around 12.45 pm at Mbagala Saku in Temeke District. Temeke RPC, Mr Englebert Kiondo said on Saturday that the man identified as Abbas Ibrahimu (26) used a khanga to hang himself.
No message was found. He said the body of the deceased was taken to Temeke Hospital for preservation and investigations are still in progress.
