Church of Uganda Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali, on Tuesday launched a fundraising drive for the construction of the Anglican Martyrs shrine at Namugongo.
Former Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyoyo and the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali display the artistic the building.
Ntagali announced the fundraising drive during at a news conference at the Church of Uganda headquarters in Kampala.
Flanked by the former Archbishop, Livingstone Mpalanyi Nkoyooyo, Ntagali also said a three storeyed guest house will be constructed at the shrine to offer accommodation facilities to tourists and pilgrims.
Ntagali and Nkoyooyo said the works on the two projects is expected to begin in March.
Nkoyooyo, who is the chairperson of the committee spearheading the construction works, said the two projects will be pursued concurrently. A total of 61 Christians and Muslims were killed on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga after they refused to denounce their faith between 1885 and 1887.
Of these, 23 were Anglicans, 22 Catholics and 16 Muslims. Anglican and Catholic pilgrims from across the World converge at Namugongo on every June 3, to celebrate the resolute commitment of the Martyrs to their faiths.
