The stalemate surrounding the formation of two powerful House committees has been resolved.
CORD yesterday announced it had given up the fight with the Jubilee side over the composition of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and Public Investment Committee (PIC).
CORD will get 13 slots in the PAC and the PIC while Jubilee will have 14 slots in the two committees.
CORD had insisted on getting more slots in the two committees, which it also wanted to chair, arguing that Government cannot check itself.
Speaking after a meeting that brought together CORD legislators, CORD said they had agreed to end the stalemate and were now ready to table the list of nominees to the various House committees.
Minority Whip Gideon Mung’aro said they have been engaging with Jubilee and agreed to accept their proposal.
“We have been talking with our friends from Jubilee and we have been informing our members of the talks and how far we have reached,” he said.
The MP made the remarks even as CORD disclosed they will be presenting a proposal to amend the Standing Orders so that Minority in the House will have control over the two committees.
Mung’aro and Minority Leader Francis Nyenze said they will soon be forwarding the proposal to the Speaker for approval in order to have the legal backing since the Standing Orders are not clear as of now.
The two said their amendments should be considered by House Business Committee and also discussed in the House.
The National Assembly has 28 committees, but only four are formed with 24 remaining to be constituted.
CORD had threatened to pull out of the four committees already in place, and maintained it would not name their MPs to the other committes.
