There is no room for personnel involved in the special operation coded “Kimbunga” (whirlwind) for taking bribes, the operation’s Head of Communications, Ms Zamaradi Kawawa said.
Ms Kawawa was clarifying allegations raised by one newspaper that officials involved in the Kimbunga exercise, aimed at flushing out illegal immigrants are demanding bribes.
“However, citizens should know that if there are personnel in this operation who are demanding and receiving bribes, they are going against the law and if anyone has evidence, they should report the matter to any regional or district PCCB office,” Ms Kawawa said.
She reminded the public that the purpose of the exercise was to apprehend people living in the country illegally and not otherwise.
There were 36,000 refugees from Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda who came to the country between 1959 and 1961 and resided in Kagera Region in Kimuli, Nkwenda, Mwase and were naturalised and given citizenship in 1983 that was not extended to their children as their parents did not apply citizenship for them.
