Contractors are scheduled to attend their annual Consultative Meeting in Dar es Salaam effective Thursday, this week that will go parallel with exhibition of construction technology, services and products.
Speaking with reporters in Dar es Salaam, the Contractors Registration Board (CRB) Registrar, Engineer Boniface Muhegi said the meeting would also assess their achievements realized in the past 15 years and challenges facing it. The CRB chief urged contractors to turn up in big number to attend the annual consultative meeting for the year 2013.
“The board shall present what has been achieved in the last 15 years and the challenges that still hinder the performance of contracting industry in Tanzania,” he said. The theme of the meeting is “15 years of CRB: Achievements and Challenges.”
“This is a very crucial meeting…I urge both foreign and domestic contractors in the country to actively participate,” he said.
Eng Muhegi said that the meeting will bring together contractors, consultants, clients, policy makers, regulators and other construction industry stakeholders who will discuss and brainstorm on what should be done to improve the services offered by the industry.
It is expected that some 800 participants from within and outside the country and 100 exhibitors will participate in the meeting.
A total of four papers focusing on the achievements and challenges after 15 years of CRB shall be presented. The papers shall focus on achievements and challenges in registration and regulation of contractors; capacity building of contractors and stakeholders perspective on the CRB achievements and challenges.
Eng Muhegi noted that all participating contractors will acquire Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points and also their participation will help them in the process to upgrade their grades in the CRB register.
A panel discussion of four industry practitioners and other participants will discuss what needs to be done in the next five years to improve services provided by CRB. Eng Muhegi said a lot have been achieved for the past 15 years such as the increase of contractors from 1,000 to 7,000 today and implementation of huge construction projects crucial for the country’s economic development.
Statistics show that construction sector grows at 11 per cent next to mining sector and also contributes seven per cent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Also 60 per cent of the development budget is channeled in this sector.
