Dar es Salaam Gets State-Of-The-Art Heart Institute With Support Of China

Dar es Salaam: Treatment of heart patients will now be one step ahead in Dar es Salaam. The city now has a state-of-the-art and first ever heart institute. It is a state-of-the-art Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) at the Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH).

It is said the new institute will now be able to save more lives in the city and also help in reducing the costs of treatment. It also means lot the nation as it will fulfil the demand of a kind in East and Central Africa.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Seif Rashid has urged the NHIF to begin accommodating heart complications in their health schemes.

The heart institute has been set up with support of China that collaborated with the government here. Tanzania has spent more than 2.5bln/- a year to support heart treatment abroad, but now all the patients will be handled at the new centre.

Dr Rashid the set up of heart institute in Dar es Salaam is one more milestone in friendship with China. Earlier patients use to undergo costly treatment outside Tanzania, but now they can get the same treatment here in the country by highly trained medical surgeons.

Earlier President Kikwete had visited China to discuss over the possibilities of extended financial support of about 16.6bn/- with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

The financial support was for enhanced construction of the new heart institute along with the installation of necessary equipment.

Professor Joseph Kuzilwa, Chairperson of MNH Board, expressed his delight for the institute saying it will receive heart patients from across the region as well as from beyond regional borders.
