Dar es Salaam water supply set to improve significantly

Water supply in Dar es Salaam is expected to increase by 50 per cent after completion of a project involving laying down a water pipe with the width of 1,800 millimetres between lower Ruvu and Ardhi University, next February.

Minister for Water and Irrigation, Professor Jumanne Maghembe

The Dar es Salaam Water and Sewerage Authority (DAWASA) acting Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Boniface Kasiga, said in the city on Wednesday that the new water pipe would have the capacity of pumping 270 million litres per day.

“This will boost water supply to the city because the current pipe transmits 180 million litre per day,” said Eng. Kasiga, who is also the DAWASA technical service director.

He said the project estimated to cost 121bn/- would also involve identifying new sources aimed at curbing shortage of water in the city. He said the 15-month project was being financed by the government and executed by a China based contractor, Sino Hydro Corporation Limited under a German based consultant, HP Gauff Ingenieure GmbH Company (KG-JBG).

Eng. Kasiga said the government has already compensated people living in the area where the pipeline would pass. Project Manager, Eng. Eric Omuruli, said the project, which started on November, last year, will also involve renovation of the current infrastructure.

It is reported that at least 46 per cent of water is lost per day due to poor infrastructure and vandalism. The Minister for Water, Prof Jumanne Maghembe, said recently that the country expects to attain an average water supply of between 90 and 100 per cent in major regional urban centres throughout the country by December 2014.
