Dar flood victims to be supplied with cement


The government plans to start providing cement to victims of the 2011 floods relocated to Mabwepande, on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, Kinondoni District Commission, Mr Jordan Rugimbana, has announced.

The cement is support by President Jakaya Kikwete who promised to give each household a hundred bags in order to build permanent houses in the area.

Mr Rugimbana made the remarks in Dar es Salaam over the weekend during the laying of a foundation stone for the construction of 851 housing units for civil servants at Mabwepande.

“I would like to assure the people of Mabwepande (floods victims) that as from next week they will start receiving cement which President Jakaya Kikwete pledged to supply for them to construct their permanent houses,” he said, adding that the government was working to ensure they received necessary requirements in the area.

He however said that before supplying the cement to the victims, the Mabwepande construction committee and the government would meet and discuss how to assist the victim construct the houses.

“We are planning to meet with the construction committee at Mabwepande and discuss ways that would ensure that the victims will use the cement to build their houses as planned,” he said.

According to Mr Rugimbana, the government planned to come up with a strategy that would ensure the victims constructed the houses using the support.


“We had planned to reverse the plan of giving them one hundred bags each…but instead provide them with other building materials to enable them construct the houses,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Works, Dr John Magufuli, has highly praised the area residents for their support and cooperation with Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) constructors.

“I have not heard of any case concerning you (Mabwepande) from our constructors, you have been cooperative. I encourage you to continue with the spirit,” he said.

According to Dr Magufuli, construction of the 851 civil servants’ houses will enable the residents to have access to better roads and other facilities.
