Twenty six players have so far registered for a special chess training programme scheduled for today at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC).
Tanzania Chess Foundation chairman Vinay Choudary told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ in Dar es Salaam that preparations for the training were in final touches and the programme will take place as planed.
“Everything is in place, coaches are ready to conduct training, we are looking forward to a successful first ever training,” he said.
Choudary said that so far all registered 26 players aged 10-20 are boys and girls have not shown interest to attend the programme. “We have received boys’ names only…and it is a good response. It is disappointing to see no girls but we are looking forward to kick start the programme,” he said.
Choudary said that the programme aimed at preparing a pool of well trained and competitive players, who will represent the country at the International Norway Chess Olympiad tournament to be held in the Nordic country later this year.
The chairman said they are looking for five talented players, who will form the national team and travel to Norway. He said that the training will be held every month at the club and hope that more players will come forward for future training.
“We need as many players as possible. We encourage more players and parents to bring interested kids to the programme so as to have a strong foundation of the sport in the country,” he said.
Choudary added that his foundation, the Tanzania Chess Association and Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club are working together in a bid to revive chess.
