Tanga Regional Commissioner Ms Chiku Galawa has urged the residents to fight against sodomy, saying the malpractice was both immoral and against traditions and customs.
She said there was evidence that sodomy incidents were on the increase in the region and, therefore, every good citizen should come out and fight the immorality in the community.
The regional commissioner was speaking at the launch of an organization formed to combat gender discrimination and protect the rights of women and girl children in the region known as Tanga Women Development Initiative (TAWODE).
She said a number of organizations were now engaged in assisting girl children, but challenged them to extend their efforts to helping boys as well.
She said boys were victims of sodomy in the region, adding that most of them were being lured by evil people who were bent on satisfying their immoral desires.
According to Ms Chiku, people who committed sodomy were of no use in the community, thus should be identified and taken to court so that they pay for their evil deeds.
“Tanga is a region of civilized people but some uncivilized people try to spoil our good customs by indulging in sodomy, which is an abomination before God…I surge such people to stop their dirty game because once they are caught they will face stern legal measures and finally go to hell after their life on earth,” she said.
Speaking about girls, the regional boss urged parents to give equal learning opportunity to both girls and boys. She said some parents favoured boys in education, leaving girls for domestic chores, which hindered the development not only of the family, but of the nation as a whole.
“The habit of using girls as a source of money for families is outdated. If there are still some people in the community perpetuating the habit they should stop immediately.
Today girls must get equal learning opportunity because they are quite able if they are empowered through education,“ she said.
