Bongo Flavor artistes Kala Jeremiah and Ommy Dimpoz were the biggest winners of the Tanzania Music Awards 2013 after each picked up three gongs.
The thrilling awards presentation gala took place at Mlimani City Hall in Dar es Salaam on Saturday night. Upcoming Jeremiah was named Best Hip-Hop Artist, Best Composer- Hip-Hop and Best Hip-Hop Song awards, beating stiff competition from Fid Q, Joh Makini, Professa J and Stamina.
He wowed the crowd with his performance and soothing voice on the night and Dimpoz is continuing his reign as music’s hottest new thing. The ‘Baadae’ singer picked up three gongs on the night, making him one of the biggest winners of the annual event that recognizes and honours outstanding performers in various music genres.
He received Best Song- Bongo Pop and Video of-the-Year awards thanks to his hit track ‘Baadae’, while is Me and You track, in which he featured Vanessa Mdee, was voted Best Featured Song.
Chaz Baba of Mashujaa Band was also one of the big winners of the evening as he received accolades for Best Male Artist- Bands, Best Writer – Band and Best Song-Bands.
Chaz Baba has set a new record in the TMA awards by after landing the best song- bands category for a third consecutive year. Meanwhile, Mashujaa Band was named Band of the Year with its rapper Fagason receiving Best Rapper award, which capped a fantastic achievement by the fancied dance-music band.
Other winners included Jahazi Modern Taraab who received two awards; Best Taarab Group and Best Male Artist – won by group leader, Mzee Yusuf. Thabit Abdul and Isha Mashauzi of Mashauzi Classic were respectively voted Best Writer and Best Female Artist – Taarab.
Khadija Kopa’s Mjini Chuo Kikuu won Best Song- Taarab. Other recipients were Ben Pol, Amin, Recho, Mrisho Mpoto, Ali Nipishe Amorosso, Man Water and Lady Jay Dee.
