Doctor says Sumbawanga’s ‘dead woman’ is mentally ill

The mysterious woman who had been declared dead five years ago before being seen alive walking in the streets of Sumbawanga town in Rukwa Region two weeks ago, has now been diagnosed with mental illness .

The woman who was earlier admitted to the Rukwa Regional Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), has now been transferred to the psychiatric unit at the regional health facility for treatment. The hospital’s Medical Doctor in-charge, Dr Gasper Nduasinde told the “Sunday News” over the phone that after systematic medical observations, she has been diagnosed with mental illness and formally started treatment.

Dr Nduasinde further insisted that she was admitted to the ICU not because she was seriously sick, but the move was meant to protect her from people flocking the health facility in large numbers; some of them were even peeping through the windows of ward number 8 where she had been earlier admitted.

According to Dr Nduasinde, the noisy and curious crowd was not only disturbing the medical staff at the hospital, but also patients who are admitted at the regional health facility However, he noted that since she was taken to the hospital two weeks ago, preliminary medical observations show that the woman has shown symptoms related to mental illness and as the situation has calmed at the health facility she was then transferred from ICU to psychiatric unit for proper treatment .

The woman was taken to the hospital on April 18, this year for medical observation and was formally admitted in Ward Number 8 and thereafter to ICU for protection and now at the Psychiatric Unit, but since then her relatives has never appeared to identify her and confirm whether the story was real or fictitious.

Dr Nduasinde further observed that though the woman does not speak much, she was declared harmless, as she chants religious songs and prayers throughout the night, but remains quiet during the day.
