The city fathers have been blamed for poor management of garbage collection and causing environmental pollution in Dar es Salaam.
The Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office -Environment, Dr Terezya Huvisa, told a news conference in the city yesterday that despite the cleanliness campaigns, wastes were not collected timely in the city.
She was briefing journalists on the visit of the Vice- President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal in Dar es Salaam and Coast Region aimed at inspecting cleanliness in the two regions on July 21 and 22. Dr Huvisa said that the goal of the Vice’President’s visit is to evaluate the cleanliness campaign which was launched on February 12, 2011, saying the campaign is being conducted every first Saturday of a month.
She said because of the campaign the ministry of health and social welfare has introduced cleanliness competition to cities and towns and that the winner was awarded during the World Environment Day.
The minister urged members of the public to cultivate the habit of cleanliness in their surroundings and that residents should collect the wastes in their surroundings. Launching a report on the Dar es Salaam state of environment in the city recently, Dr Huvisa said urbanisation was a major challenge for environmental management, saying the report would provide the city council with guidelines to keep the city clean.
She said the report was the result of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), which took place in Kampala in 2002, saying the AMCEN discovered that lack of information on the state of environment was the hindrance to the implementation of the international agreement on the environmental management.
