The programme starting early this year comes after evidence has shown that the education sector was expanding sharply with the higher education institutions hiring new and younger teaching staff without experience.
Speaking to the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ on Friday, the DUCE Assistant Lecturer Mr Reuben Ndimbo said the programme targets to introduce participants to the basic principles of higher education teaching.
“The aim of this programme is to enable students to acquire a broad conceptual understanding of the core principles and values as well as a mastery of the basic technique and strategies in teaching in higher education institutions,” he said.
According to him, DUCE has seen a need to orient academic staff in higher education on the basic philosophy, principles and methodologies for teaching learners in higher education institutions. The programme organised in seven modules intends to enable the participants to be able to comprehend better the changing nature of the higher education nationally, regionally and globally.
Additionally, he said, the programme will empower teachers to develop, appraise and use different teaching techniques and strategies in course development. Mr Ndimbo mentioned other new programmes as the English proficiency certificates, editing and translating services as well as Postgraduate (PGDE) Programme in Education which is an evening programme.
“On the PGDE, we aim to train those interested individuals who intend to work or are already working in the education sector and wish to enhance their career prospects in the teaching profession,” he said.
He said all the new programmes were introduced to the people who visited DUCE pavilion at the just ended Higher Education Exhibitions where many showed interests of studying them.
PGDE programme provides a flexible route to earn a teaching profession and allows a candidate to combine work and study and leads to the certification in teaching qualification similar to Bachelor of both Science and Arts with Education
