With barely a week to go, top Tanzania players including defending champion Angel Eaton, are wary of missing out on the Uganda Ladies Open Championship due to lack of sponsorship.
The 2013 Uganda Ladies Open is scheduled for October 3-5 at Entebbe Golf Club in Uganda. Star players Hawa Wanyeche and Eaton told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam that they are looking forward to participating in the tournament, but they are still searching for sponsors to make their dream come true.
Wanyeche, the Tanzania Open 2013 champion, said she is in high spirit and ready for the Uganda Championship after faring well in Arusha, but all depends on the support she will get from sponsors.
Eaton, who won the tournament last year in Kampala, is one of the players who have been doing a good job for Tanzania in international events, but her trip to Uganda banks on sponsors. Eaton missed the Tanzania Ladies Open in Arusha last week as she was suffering from malaria but she is doing fine and is ready to defend her title.
“I’m now OK as you can see and if all goes well I will need to go to Entebbe as early as possible so that I can have good practice before the event as it will be my first time there and the course is new to me,” she said. Last year Tanzania players were in top form and won all three top prizes.
Eaton emerged the overall winner in the 54 holes event played at Kitante Golf Course, Kampala after carding a total 225 gross points. She fired 73 in the first day and 75 and 77 in the second and third days respectively to clinch her first title in Uganda. Another national team member Madina Iddi finished second after scooping 229 (76, 76, 77) while Wanyeche was third on countback with 229 (75, 75, 79).
The 54 hole event played off scratch over three days aims to, among other things, bring the best lady golfers in the region to compete for the top honour. According to the organizers, the Open is for the first time, played on a different course. It is usually played at Kitante. Early this year, Madina won her first title in Uganda after overcoming stiff challenge from a host of top players at Entebbe Ladies Open.
Despite the pressure and tough competition against Uganda’s top class golfers, she manage to excel in her first visit to the lakeside course in Entebbe by seven strokes after a total six over par 147 (70, 77).
