The Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) has hailed the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court for its historical judgment which set free two senior journalists who are also members of the forum.
The journalists set free are Mr Theofil Makunga of Mwananchi Communications and Absalom Kibanda of New Habari Corporation who is also the TEF Chairman.
Speaking during the editors’ meeting held at Tanga Beach Resort Hotel, the TEF General Secretary Mr Neveille Meena said that the judgment was historical as justice took its course.
He said the court case was not an easy thing because it had drawn the attention of many stakeholders, who were eager to know what the outcome of the judgment.
“If you go to court one of two results are expected whether to be convicted or set free but the greater possibility is for someone to be convicted, that is why when someone facing a court case is set free, he or she becomes elated…and that is what happened to our brothers,” he said.
According to him, the two-year long case had paralyzed their organization as they were forced to use a lot of time dealing with the case taking into account that the involved persons were among key stakeholders of TEF.
The one-day meeting organized by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) among other things received a 2012-2015 baseline study programme report from MCT, aimed at improving the quality and betterment of the media sector in the country.
