Dar es Salaam – About four hundred students of an Islamic School in Dar es Salaam are now into uncertainty after fire broke out in their school at around 9 p.m. turning it to ruins.
The fire was followed by stampede and about eleven students have been hospitalized. However, there has been no report of anyone being burnt.
Three dormitories and 7 classes have been burnt. Belongings of students have been turned into ashes.
Exams have started couple of days ago and the victims said they would be adversely affected.
One of the victims, Amina Hassan, said they started smelling smoke while studying and saw a big flame within a minute that engulfed the hostels. Students started running in panic and stampede took place.
Students have been shifted to neighboring Ilala Islamic school and temporary dorms have been created too at the premises.
School director Mwinyi Kombo said the loss has been admitted to be more than Sh500 million as nothing was saved.
He added the fire has surprised them as a similar incident had happened at their Ilala Islamic Primary School.
The Dar es Salaam Inter-religion peach council has donated fifty desks to the school and the regional security committee has announced of handing some 100 mattresses.
Dar es Salaam regional commissioner Paul Makonda said, “We must help these children especially because some of them I hear are doing their exams.”
