Next weekend’s KCB Mobi Bank Voi Rally is set to witness some scintillating cockpit battle royale pitting four Kenya National Rally Champions.
Current Champion, Carl Tundo who has four KNRC titles under his belt, three times (1998, 2005, 2006) champion Azar Anwar, 2008 champion a nd current leader Baldev “Boldy” Chager, and six times champion Ian Duncan are the Division One men expected to renew their rivalry in an event that will be organised by East African Safari Rally (EASR) on Saturday.
The event is co-sponsored by iWay-Africa, ICEA Lion Group and ALS.
Also expected to pounce on the champions- just in case they stumble- are a group of dedicated youngsters led by Quentin Mitchell and the Horsey siblings-Peter and Alex.
Notable absentee is indeed the double 1999 and 2010 Champion Alastair Cavenagh who has announced that he will be skipping the Voi tour due to some prior commitment.
Clearly throwing down the gauntlet in the process to the younger drivers, Cavenagh quipped: “It would be nice and it’s actually high time that some of the younger drivers start upping their game and setting fastest stage times challenging for both stage and rally victories.”
Cavenagh will be away competing in a gruelling Iron Man competition (swim 1.9km, cycle 90km plus half marathon combined) to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis that weekend in Mallorca, Spain and had hoped that the dates would not clash.
“It is a shame that I will miss yet another round of the
Championship,” said Cavenagh who missed the first round due to a rib injury.
Chager is leading the KNRC 2013 series with 140 points ahead of Anwar and Tundo who have so far garnered 90 and 80 points respectively.
Six national titles and multiple victories have established Duncan as the most successful driver amongst the current frontrunners.
