The Mwalimu Nyerere Twenty20 Cricket Cup will be held at Butimba Teachers Training Collage ground in Mwanza involving four teams.
Mwanza Regional Cricket Association (MRCA) chairman Sriram Chukkapalli told the ‘Daily News’ from Mwanza on Tuesday that the tournament will start over the weekend and will climax on October 14.
Sriram named the participating team as Mwanza Star and Victorians all from Mwanza and Dar es Salaam U-19 and Biks Biks.
“We have organized a four-team cricket league which is played on a twenty overs format. All is well and Mwanza teams battled it out on the opening day over the weekend,” he said.
He added that Dar es Salaam-based teams are expected in Mwanza on Friday ready for the showdown being held on a league basis.“We started the league with Mwanza teams facing each other and we expect team from Dar es Salaam to join us this coming weekend,” he said.
According to Sriram, Mwanza Star were in control winning their first match with a big margin.They were first to bat and managed 192 runs before Victorians replied to finish with only 128 all out in 18 overs.
Mwanza Star’s Sriram inspired his team’s victory with 65 runs not out, Boby Gajendra Singh recorded 51 runs and Dilip Singhpura scored 21 runs not out.
Nish Patel scored 50 runs and Pukesh Shah 23 for Mwanza Victorians.
The win puts Mwanza Star in a better position as the league gains momentum on Saturday and Sunday before Monday’s final. They now await U-19 and Biks Bik to know their fate.
