Gabon’s New President Appoints FM Ngondet As Prime Minister

Gabon President Ali Bongo has named new prime minister. Foreign Minister Emmanuel Issoze Ngondet has been promoted for the chair.

Bongo won the election by thin margin and took oath of president a day before. His integrity was earlier widely questioned by international observers.

In a televised statement the president was learned asking Ngondet to form the new government. He also signaled members of opposition could also be invited to join in the creation of the group to govern the country.

Bongo emerged victory with less than 6,000 votes. It was unwelcomed by many in the oil-producing state in Central Africa. Only handful of leaders from the continent attended the inauguration ceremony for the sworning of the president for a second seven-year term.

Opposition leader Jean Ping disagreed with the election result and said it was rigged. The voting was held on August 27.

Bongo’s family has ruled Gabon for about 49 years.

Meanwhile, France has called for the recounting of the votes and European Union (EU) claims there were anomalies in the Bongo’s stronghold province of Haut-Ogooue.

There were 99.9 percent turnout in his province and Bongo won by 95 percent of votes.

Ngondet will be replacing Daniel Ona Ondo.

The deadline for the formation of new government was not revealed in the televised statement on national channel, but sources said it would be done in less than a week.

After the announcement of the election result the parliament was set aflame and opposition headquarters were also bombed.
