Golf Union reschedules Morogoro Open

The Morogoro Open Golf Tournament that was scheduled to tee off the Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) 2014 calendar next week has been postponed to next month.

The 36 holes stroke play event was scheduled to run from February 22 to 23 this year at the Morogoro Gymkhana Club but it will now be held from March 22 to 23 this year at the same course.

TGU Vice-Chairman Joseph Tango told the ‘Sunday News’ in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the event has been rescheduled for several reasons, which however, he could not mention.

“We’ve decided to push forward Morogoro Open tournament to next month, this means the other tournaments in the calendar including Coast Open which was expected to be held at club late in March will also be affected by the changes,” he said.

Tango added that Cargo Stars Tanzania Ltd (CSL) will be the main sponsor of the annual national tournament. The company had been sponsoring the tournament since 1997 and CSL Managing Director Dioniz Malinzi said last year that they will continue doing so. This will be second time TGU has to postpone their activities in this year’s calendar.

First was Lugalo Open, which was supposed to kick off this year’s TGU competition calendar at the Tanzania Peoples’ Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Club in January due to lack of sponsorship.

The Morogoro Open, like other national tournaments, is the Order of Merit TGU event that helps the union to identify good players, who can feature in the national team.

Defending champion Nuru Mollel will be among those who will fight for the top honours. The Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) youngster was in a sparkling form when he won the title last year. He bounced back from a shot deficit to emerge winner with five shots clear.
