Richard Gomes started 2014 well after he was crowned the New Year Golf Challenge champion at the Arusha Gymkhana Club (AGC) course over the weekend.
The handicap-7 Gomes put down a good show to overcome a stiff challenge from the club’s top golfer to win the Division A top prize at the club’s first tournament of the year, which was also meant to welcome the new year.
AGC is one of the Tanzania-based clubs that are active and busy throughout the year when it comes to organising club and national tournaments. Gomes recorded a stunning score of three-under 39 stable ford points at the 18 holes event to win the top prize.
He collected from where he had left on December 21, 2013, when he finished third overall at the Three Clubs tournament – the last event for 2013 – where he was beaten by overall winner Jay Nathwani and Hiten Nathwani on countback after each returned 35 points.
The Division A runner-up position at the New Year Challenge went to Daniel Karpela, handicap-2, who carded level-36 and forced Muzzafar Yusufali, handicap-11, to settle at third place on countback, after he returned the same score.
Playing off handicap-21, Murad Jivan also had a very impressive score of 39 points that earned him Division B top prize, while Jatin Sonacha, playing off handicap-17, had two-under 38 to finish second.
Due to the impressive score Jivan and Jatin handicaps were also chopped to 20 and 16 respectively. In the Division C, handicap-28 Aliabass Somji collected 35 points to win the top prize.
