Every time the national team, Harambee Stars, goes to camp, the Football Kenya Federation ( FKF) is forced to buy basics such as water to help hydrate the players and make training sessions bearable.
On Thursday, however, the team’s water problems came to an end when SAB Miller announced a lucrative Sh1million sponsorship deal for the team.
The agreement means that SAB Miller will supply the team with Keringet water.
The Stars are currently preparing for Sunday’s World Cup qualifying match against Namibia at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.
The sponsorship agreement between SAB Miller and the local federation will also be extended to teams taking part in the GOtv Shield organised by the Football Kenya Federation.
Speaking during the unveiling of the sponsorship, SAB Miller Marketing Director Sheila Changangu said the popularity of the national team has increased to unprecedented levels and this is what attracted the firm to seek a partnership with the Stars.
“Through this partnership, we will become the brand that is enjoyed by the national team during World Cup qualifier matches and training sessions, and hopefully tap into the many fans who come out to watch the team every time they play,” she pointed out.
FKF Chairman Sam Nyamweya thanked the company for the support and said it had come at the right time.
Nyamweya said FKF continues to attract a lot of support from corporate bodies and pointed out that this can only get better.
“In the last few months since coming into office we have had several firms lining up behind us and this is a demonstration of the faith they have in us.
“We want to thank the government for leading the way in this,” he said.
The Ministry of Sports has approved Sh4 million to support the team’s preparations ahead of the match against Namibia.
Nyamweya urged other sponsors to come alongside the team and the federation in other aspects so as to develop the sport.
Speaking at the same venue, Kenyan Premier League Chief Executive Jack Oguda said the decision by SAB Miller to support the national team is a positive one as far as promoting football is concerned.
