Pemba has a considerable number of attractive historical sites and structures, some dating back more than 100 years, but risk varnishing due to lack of protection.
Mr Salum Seif, head of the Department Archeology and Historical Sites said the government must support the programme to protect the historical sites before they are lost.
“We need to protect the sites because it’s another source of revenue as tourists visit, also it’s important to preserve for educational purposes,” Seif said. He added that the historical structures such as ruins and caves are important in advertising Zanzibar abroad and remain an attraction for more tourism.
Seif also urged members of the public particularly living close to the sites to protect them.
