The ‘Wolverine’ actor sings several numbers from ‘Les Miserables’, ‘The Boy From Oz’, ‘Guys and Dolls’ as well as ‘Carousel’ at benefit concert ‘One Night Only’.
Hugh Jackman and his fans raised as much as $1.85 million at his show “One Night Only” which took place at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on his birthday, October 12. Money raised from the show benefits the Motion Picture & Television Fund which provides health care and other services to entertainment-industry workers and retirees.
“This is probably the most narcissistic way to spend your birthday. I chose my favorite songs and told stories about my life,” he said, as quoted by the Associated Press. “A lot of guys would say to their wife, ‘Do you mind if I go play golf with my buddies?’ That’s how I am about the show. I love it. If there’s a song I don’t like, I cut it and bring in a new song. Everything is something I want to do. So to be here tonight, supporting this cause – and it couldn’t have been a more generous crowd if it tried – in every way it was great.”
In the charity gig, Jackman was backed by 17-member orchestra as he sang several songs from “Les Miserables”, “The Boy From Oz”, “Guys and Dolls” as well as “Carousel”. He also sang a tribute to his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, told the audience about his family and shared images from his native country Australia.
The Saturday show was packed with 4,500 guests. Celebrities such as Cybill Shepherd, Darren Criss, Carole Bayer Sager and director Bryan Singer were among the attendees. Tom Cruise was also in attendance.
In the end of the two-and-a-half-hour show, the actor auctioned off several items such as Wolverine claws, tickets to the 2014 premiere of “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, an original Wolverine signed jacket, a Panerai watch, and a Fiat 500e that went for $50,000, according to Deadline. Two undershirts which he wore at the show were also auctioned off at $11,000 each.
