Following the assault on a Tanzanian girl in Indian city of Bengaluru earlier this year the foreign students are not being paid housing allowances by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
It is said the government wants foreign students to stay in college hostels instead of renting an accommodation to avoid such incidents.
Those who opt not to reside in college hostels with ICCR scholarships are given housing allowances. Lately it is alleged the council has not made payment of the allowances for months and this makes for the students tough in making both ends meet.
Students argue the college hostels are not good and hence they opt to stay in rented flats.
The non-payment of allowances is making tough for the students to find accommodation near to their respective colleges.
ICCR Regional Director P Venugopal said many students prefer to stay outside and hence their requests are currently under consideration.
He added the students who opt to stay outside need to produce a letter from their respective embossies.
Venugopal added, “ICCR is very concerned about the academic interests of the students.”
